our first home.

Have you ever wondered why God chose a garden as the first home of humanity?

I have.

And really … I’ve asked myself, why NOT a mansion? Why NOT an adorable cottage? Why NOT a tall extravagant building … Or a Cathedral where the morning and evening light is captured by stain glass art?

He’s capable of creating ANYTHING … so why a garden?

We will never know what that first garden looked like. And maybe, that’s good, because then we’re invited into a conversation. Or even into our imaginations.

It makes me curious. What’s so special about a garden? What did it provide for humanity that God knew we needed?

Maybe it’s because a garden provides:

Sanctuary.

Beauty.

Food.

Conversation.

Deep intimate connection.

Purpose.

Peace.

Rest.

God asked Adam and Eve to be part of the tending and keeping. He invited them to be a part of the creative process. He said, come … be a gardener with me.

He invited them to:

Walk.

Look.

Touch.

Taste.

See.

Drink.

Plant.

Savor.

A God who needs no one and needs nothing says, I want you to be with Me … to create with Me.

Yes, yes. I know how the rest of the story goes. But I want to sit in these moments in the story … in the garden before all things are broken.

It’s like He’s saying, I want you to experience me as God but I also want you to experience me as friend.

He’s always ever wanted to be connected to our hearts. Maybe it’s the best place for us to see Him more fully but also where we get to be seen by Him, known by Him, loved by Him …

You may not have a plant garden to tend to, but our hearts are like gardens, our families are like gardens, our marriages are like gardens, our friendships are like gardens, our homes are like gardens …

So, I’m inviting you to be a gardener with me. I’m inviting you to see yourself as a gardener. One who is tending and keeping. One who is pruning and weeding. One who is sowing and harvesting. One who is creating and experiencing beauty.

What garden do you find yourself tending and keeping; and what do you think about the first garden home?

P.S. I’d love to invite you into my garden soon.

The Garden Experience: Floral Design Workshops You’ll walk the garden with me with a tasty drink and snack in hand, learn flower names and harvesting techniques, harvest some flowers from the garden, gain a new skill by learning to arrange a garden-style centerpiece, and receive a pack of seeds from my garden.

Let me know if you’ve got a group of friends that would like to do this experience on a different day and time. I’d be happy to work with you and offer group rates.
